Our Project: Family Fun Day to Benefit a Playgroup for Babies/Toddlers with Down Syndrome
Hello, our names are Heidi and James Carter. We live in England near Birmingham, in a place called Coventry. Our project is to organize a Family Fun Day and Barbeque for local children and their families, during the month of September.
We will sell tickets for the event, raising money for a local community playgroup called Archie’s Smile, at which Heidi already volunteers. This playgroup helps babies and toddlers with Down Syndrome prepare for school. We teach them how to play nicely and we teach them Makaton, using symbols, signs and speech to help them communicate.
This Fun Day is led and organized by two young adults with Down syndrome, with unique skills. Heidi’s advocacy work is celebrated nationally, and James is a real charmer.
We think it is a powerful form of advocacy, helping to make our community more appreciative of kids with Down syndrome.
